Why Canvas Assignments Are Missing From Your Calendar
A source-first Canvas calendar checklist for finding undated, hidden, changed, or externally delayed assignments.
When a Canvas assignment is missing from your calendar, first determine which calendar view is missing it:
- Canvas Calendar;
- Canvas List View or To Do;
- an external Google, Apple, or Outlook calendar;
- your own assignment tracker.
The cause—and the fix—depends on that boundary.
1. Open the assignment itself
Verify:
- assignment exists;
- you can access it;
- current due date;
- due time;
- course and section;
- whether the date is specific to you or your group.
Do not troubleshoot only from the dashboard.
2. Check whether the assignment has a due date
Canvas documentation says assignments without due dates are categorized as Undated on Calendar and Syllabus.
Open Calendar and inspect the undated-items area if available. An undated assignment cannot appear on a specific calendar day until a date is supplied by the course.
See Instructure's student Calendar guide.
Your personal system should keep the task visible as TBD rather than invent a date.
3. Confirm the course calendar is visible
Canvas Calendar can display multiple course and group calendars. Check that the relevant course is selected.
A hidden course calendar can make the item appear missing even when the assignment is dated correctly.
4. Compare Calendar with List View
Canvas's List View Dashboard can show dated To Do items across courses in an agenda-like view. It can also include course events, announcements, and user-created to-do items.
See Instructure's current List View guide.
In List View, completed items are hidden after the page refreshes; turn on Show completed items to check whether the task was already submitted or marked complete. Also load the relevant earlier or later dates. Do not confuse the List View page with the shorter To Do sidebar on the Card View Dashboard.
If the assignment appears in one Canvas view but not another, record exactly where. That gives institutional support a more useful problem report.
5. Check the item type
Not every course activity becomes a Canvas Assignment or dated Calendar event.
A reading linked from a module, an announcement, or an undated page may require action without appearing as a dated assignment.
Your master assignment system may need a manual task when the course expects work that Canvas does not represent as a dated item.
6. Check whether the date changed
Open:
- the assignment page;
- announcements;
- syllabus/course schedule;
- instructor email.
If sources disagree, use the syllabus-versus-LMS conflict guide and preserve the wording/source until it is resolved.
Do not simply keep the earlier or later date without evidence.
7. If the problem is in Google Calendar
When Canvas shows the correct item but an external calendar does not:
- verify the correct feed is subscribed;
- check that the imported calendar is visible;
- compare other recent feed items and the documented feed scope; Canvas To Do items are excluded, and the feed has a limited date window and item count;
- allow for external refresh behavior;
- do not delete the source item;
- verify important deadlines in Canvas.
If necessary, remove and re-add the feed only after preserving the current URL and understanding whether doing so could create a second subscription.
Use How to Add Canvas Assignments to Google Calendar.
8. Check for duplicates disguised as absence
Sometimes the assignment appears under:
- a different course color;
- a changed title;
- a second imported calendar;
- the old due date;
- an all-day area.
Search the date and title before creating a replacement manually.
9. Record the unresolved task
If you cannot solve the problem immediately, add a temporary source-linked task:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Task | Exact assignment title |
| Course | Current course |
| Due | TBD or verified date |
| Source | Canvas assignment URL |
| Verification | Needs Check |
| Note | Missing from Canvas/Google Calendar as of date |
This protects the obligation without presenting an invented date as official.
10. Contact support with useful evidence
Provide:
- course and assignment;
- assignment URL;
- view where it appears;
- view where it is missing;
- due date;
- device/browser or app;
- screenshot without unrelated personal data;
- steps already checked.
Quick diagnostic table
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| Missing from Canvas Calendar | Due date and selected course calendar |
| Listed as Undated | Instructor/course has not supplied a dated assignment |
| Missing from List View | Date range, Show completed items, accessibility, and item type |
| Present in Canvas but absent externally | Calendar-feed subscription and refresh |
| Appears twice | Multiple feeds or manual copy |
| Old date remains | Source change and external refresh |
| Course work exists only in a module | Manual source-linked task may be necessary |
Canvas remains the official platform source where your institution uses it. A dependable planning system records what Canvas shows, what it does not show, and what still requires verification.
